Connect to RU Software Using Remote Desktop

Overview:

You can access SPSS, Amos or SAS from either a University or non-University Mac or PC from a service called Remote Desktop.   This service allows users to access applications and data on a remote computer over a network.

What do I need:

  • Access to remote computer where software is installed.   Contact the help desk at helpdesk@radford.edu or x7522 to request access.  Note:  Access for students will only be granted when requested by faculty members
  • Launch WebVPN client if accessing from off-campus.
  • Launch Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).  See directions below

PC (XP, Windows 7 & Vista) Instructions

  1. To launch the Remote Desktop Connection, go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | Remote Desktop Connection. (On some systems it will be located under Accessories > Communication
  2. Type in ru-term.radford.edu for the Computer name then click “Connect”
  3. You will see a screen that says “Welcome to the Radford University Computer System.” After you have read the window, click the OK button
  4. Type radford\username and password > click OK (This is your Radford email address and password)
  5. Start | All Programs | Radford University Course Software.  Note: SPSS may be under START | All Programs
  6. To log off from the remote desktop, go to Start | Log Off and click "Log Off"

Macintosh

  1. If you are using a Radford University owned Macintosh computer look for Remote Desktop Connection in your applications folder. If you wish to use ru-term from your own Macintosh computer you must first download Microsoft's free Remote Desktop Connection Client at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx
  2. Launch the Remote Desktop Connection application
  3. Type in ru-term.radford.edu for the Computer name then click “Connect”
  4. In the credentials window type radford\username and password > click OK (This is your Radford email address and password)
  5. The next screen you encounter will state that the program cannot verify the identity of the computer you are trying to connect to, but go ahead and click Connect
  6. If you get a Login Message error dialog box it means that you need to be granted access to ru-term. Contact the help desk at helpdesk@radford.edu or x7522 to request access.
  7. You will know when the program starts because it will look like you are at a Windows machine :-(  From here select Start | All Programs | Radford University Course Software.  Note: SPSS may be under START | All Programs
  8. To log off from the remote desktop, go to Start | Log Off and click "Log Off"
