2013 Virginia State Geographic Bee

The 2013 State Bee was held Friday, April 5, at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. The Bee was ably directed by Donna Fontaine, 4th grade teacher at Westside Elementary School, Isle of Wight County Schools. Local arrangements were facilitated by Dr. Ed Kinman, Longwood University. Volunteers, many of whom are members of the VGA, served as judges, moderators for preliminary rounds, scorekeepers, and timers. Questions for the Final and Championship Rounds were read by Dr. Bill Carstensen, Chair of the Geography Department at Virginia Tech.

One hundred and six contestants from all across the Commonwealth competed in 8 preliminary rounds to select the 10 state finalists. Since 23 students had no wrong answers, a tiebreaker round was necessary. The ten finalists were: Ashwin Srinivasan, Jonathan Griggs, Nicolas Ruiz, Nishanth Anand, Akhil Rekulapelli, Jacob Coleman, Colin Murphy, Pradyuta Padmanabhan, Matthew Maribojoc, and Max Baskin.
