Powhatan State Park

April 22:  Homeschool Event

Calling all home-schoolers! Join us for a walk in the woods in search of the pesky plant-life within the park. We will investigate the effects of these unwelcomed guests and take home a special reminder of all our hard work. As part of the Bioblitz effort we will be recording all of our findings along the way.

This program will involve a hike of approx. 1 mile, so be prepared for an exciting outdoor adventure. Remember to dress appropriately and drink plenty of water. Ages 8 and up.

April 23 Event

8 am. Guided Bioblitz: the public is invited to take an extended guided hike through the park, they will journal their findings or use their own smart phone devices (if they have signal) to record species data. This will be approximately 6 miles worth of hiking.

10 am. Captain Planet: we explore Earth, Wind, Fire, Air, and Water and how we can protect each of them through games and crafts. We will modify this program during the Earth and Water portion of the program to collect data for the Bioblitz. (This allows the younger kids and their parents to be involved).

1 pm. Earth Day Tree Planting: This is a volunteer event. Volunteers will participate in the Bioblitz by recording tree data.

Self-guided  Visitors throughout the day will be encouraged to participate in the Bioblitz. We will try to have the tablet stationed in the Park Office so visitors can upload data, if they don’t have a smart phone or other device.

More information can be found by visiting the Virginia Geographic Alliance’s registration site (http://tinyurl.com/VGABioBlitz2016) or contacting the park representatives.
