Session 1: Exploring the Cities of Renaissance Europe

The time period of the Renaissance is known as a rebirth of culture and began on the Italian Peninsula. Many of the Crusades had their points of departure from this region. The interaction with the areas of the Middle East resulted in increased trade and diffusion of ideas. In this learning activity students identify the benefits of geographic location for the northern Italian city-states in terms of their local characteristics (site) and the developing networks of trade throughout Europe and the Middle East (situation).
