Registration for “Putting Social Studies in its Place: Using GIS to Enhance the Classroom” is now open.

We are pleased to announce that registration for the Virginia Geographic Alliance-endorsed professional development opportunity, “Putting Social Studies in its Place: Using GIS to Enhance the Classroom” is now open.  The course will run from Tuesday, July 5, 2016 – Tuesday, August 2, 2016.  It is open to K-16 faculty and pre-service teachers in the state of Virginia and is limited to 50 participants.

Putting Social Studies in its Place is a FREE Online 5-week Professional Development Program that will teach you to:

Access and utilize over 30 classroom ready 15-Minute GeoInquiries for US History, Human Geography, and Earth Science

  • Use web maps as a bell-ringer, a lesson plan, and/or a classroom discussion tool
  • Create customized Web Maps that embed text, primary source Images, YouTube videos, and much more.  To access a sample map on the Louisiana Purchase go to: http://arcg.is/1xvC7Pg
  • Create a Story Map on a topic of your choice that you can use in your classroom this year and beyond.  Classroom practicality and replication is a primary goal.
  • Register your school for a free site-license for Esri’s ArcGIS Online software (Up to 500 accounts).
